Tuesday's Tip: Getting Places on Time

I hate being late. I hate feeling rushed because I think I will be late. I hate driving like a maniac and feeling like I need to in order to arrive on time. I like to get ready quickly and efficiently without haste, getting where I'm going at just the right time. Here are my tips for achieving that goal:
  • Pretend it takes longer to get there than it actually does. If it takes me fifteen minutes to get somewhere, I plan to leave half an hour before I need to be there. That extra time gives me a little leeway for the inevitable emergencies that come up, and it also allows time for buckling the kids in their car seats and unbuckling them once we arrive.
  • Pack the diaper bag the night before...and whatever else I may need. I make sure that the diaper bag (and all of the other paraphernalia we may need) is ready to go and waiting at the back door so that I just have to pick it up on the way out the door.
  • Set children's clothes out the night before so all they have to do is dress. Honestly, I don't usually do this.
  • Get up earlier. If I have to be somewhere first thing in the morning, I try to get up just a little bit earlier. A little extra time is always a good thing!
  • Be flexible. With children involved, plans almost never go as, well, planned. Invariably, my children either get up earlier or sleep later than I expected, frustrating my well-laid plans. But that's just life with children.
Of course, I still don't always get where I'm going on time, but I do try. To me, being late means missing part of the program I'm attending or wasting the time of the people who are waiting for me. And I find both of those things unacceptable.

How do you get where you're going on time? Please share!

I also hate being late! I did all the things you suggested when they were younger, and it became such a habit that now we're always 15 minutes early because I don't need the time to buckle them in :). It is great to teach your children these habits since being on time is so rare in the workplace these days.

You're the perfect person to do this post, Nikki. I've never known you to be late for anything! I'm sure you have been, since you are human, but I was always amazed at how you could always be on time for everything!

I basically do the same things you do. I also put out my health and beauty aides on the counter, towels and such out the night before as well. Blessings!

I hate being LATE but we are ALWAYS late.It seems no wonder where we are going we are behind schedule. We really need to work on this. Thanks for the ideas.I honestly think that a BIG part of our problem is there are 11 of us and one bathroom. With animals we have to take baths BEFORE we go anywhere and it just always takes longer then I plan.~Nikki R

My big thing is one you emphasized - getting as much ready the night before as possible. It is getting easier now that our girls are growing older and can get themselves ready, but I still have to take into account how long it will take to fix their hair, find a jacket, etc. We get most places on time....
