I have wanted to have a garden for several years now. It just hasn't been the right time. I was either pregnant or had a newborn. We even had the perfect place when we lived on our farm because there was all of that land. Now we live in town with a yard, and finally I have a garden. I'm so excited!
My brother and a couple of his friends started a company putting in this type of garden. It is organic, supposedly weed-free, and low maintenance. According to the literature, all I need to do is keep the garden watered until it is time to harvest the fruits of my "labor." We shall see.
Since the season is so late, I was only able to plant some corn, Roma beans, and squash. We decided to start small this year, but if I enjoy it (which I really think I will), I plan to expand next year. Already I think I may plant this entire bed with strawberries this fall, and use my new one next year for other fruits and vegetables. Of course, I need to see how this year goes.
I know that several of my readers have gardens and won't be too impressed with my little, ole thing, but I cannot wait to pick some fresh squash for supper. Won't that be fun?! (And yummy!)
By the way, my brother told me what he had been told about the tomatoes these types of garden produce. The cage is five feet tall and three feet around. He was told to expect 150 pounds of tomatoes per plant in a bad year! In a good year, one plant should produce 250 pounds. Wow! John and I don't eat tomatoes so I did not plant any this year. However, my mom did, and if what Ben was told is true, I will post pictures of her plants. If it's true, I will plant my own tomatoes for next year and try my hand at making tomato sauce. In the meantime, here is a picture of a tomato plant from their website.

Oh, I'm wanting a garden really bad right about now. I can't wait to see how your garden does this year. We have the land but the soil is poor--clay. But a friend said I could have a corner of his garden last year. I may take him up on the offer this time around even though I'll have to drive over there several times a week to care for it.
Good luck!
That is so cool!!! I have a hard time keeping plants alive but I have some ideas of things I want to try to grow in Poland. I want to plant an apple tree. It is hard with my timing because we are either here or there when I need to plant things. My brother grows broccoli when he has time here and Iza loves it. She even got to pick some off of the bush to eat. Mom has a house plant- kolanda or something like that- and I caught her eating the flowers saying it was Unlce John's broccoli. Urrr. I panicked, looked it up and thankfully it is not dangerous!
Have a great afternoon! I hope your garden grows good!
I love it!! I have been strongly considering having a raised bed garden this year; you know what they say about great minds..:) I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to pull it off or not. I may just have to go with my old spot, which isn't that impressive by the way, lol. But all I care about is that I have zucchini and tomatoes eventually. I can be happy with that.
Wow, that's a LOT of tomatoes! I'm going to check out that link.
Good for you! That is awesome! Congrats on getting it going! Keep us posted.
It is so great to be able to pick your own produce and know that you grew it with the Lord's help of course......
Blessings!!!!
Nice! What are Roma beans? I don't think I've ever heard of them. You'll have to post pictures periodically so that we can see how things are growing. I have a small container garden on the deck this year, but I keep forgetting to water it, so I'm not sure it's going to make it!
You go, girl! I am thinking about setting up some vege planter boxes for next spring, as I can't really dig up the rental property's yard, but at the moment I am restricted to some herbs and flowers in pots. I agree with Laura - post pics on progress, please!
You've got to start somewhere. This is our 4th year having a garden and we learn more and more each year. It's really trial and error. It's best to start out small. That way if it's not very successful, you will not have lost very much.
You're right...nothing like summer squash. Yummy!
So inspiring! This is on my list to do sometime. We haven't had "our own" house, so I'll have to do container gardening, but I love watching people's gardens grow. Can't wait to see all those green shoots coming up!
This is cool! I don't like squash, but tomatoes are one of my very favorite vegetables ever! Those plants look big enough to take over my entire back yard, though.
