Learning for Little Ones

Last month, some of the older mothers (when I say older, I actually mean that they have older children) in our church put together a Mother's Morning Out for us younger mothers (again, I mean that we have younger children). It was great! We turned our children over to the nursery for a few hours once a week while we fellowshiped, learned something practical, and ate lunch.

One of the things we learned was a method for teaching our children Scripture. Basically, it involves reading the passage to them a lot. Then you start leaving out a word, letting your child fill it in. The key is to make sure the child fills in the correct word.

I was not sure how this would work with Sarah Beth since she is just two and still only putting two words together. But I decided to try it. However, I was not as faithful and consistent as I should have been. I did not feel I was getting anywhere. Then I read Laura's post about how her three oldest know Psalm 100. The thing is that her two year old is only eight days older than Sarah Beth and already can recite Psalm 100. I felt like giving up in despair. We had been working on Isaiah 53:6, "All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own way." I could not even get Sarah Beth to say "sheep." She just looked at me blankly. I decided to keep at it, and the next morning after I read the verse a couple of times, Sarah Beth said, "Sheep gone astray." Wow!! I was so excited. That was the encouragement I needed, although I'm still not as consistent and faithful as I should be.

I have not been able to get Sarah Beth to say those three words again. I haven't even been able to get her to say sheep. When I say, "All we like ____," she fills in the blank with "chicken" or "doggie." I think she gets the idea that it's supposed to be an animal. I think she knows it's supposed to be a sheep, but I think she's being silly. I suppose I just need to keep plodding away. Eventually, she will get it, right?

If you have an idea for teaching your little ones, you ought to share it at Babychaser's blog. Her topic is Learning for Little Ones.

Addendum: Sarah Beth did it this morning! She said, "sheep." That was the first time; the second time, she said, "duckie." Oh, well. It's a start!

Thank you SO MUCH for participating this week!!!

And I LOVE this idea for teaching Scripture to our children. I'm going to get started today! Now I just need to pick a place to start.

Another idea I've had to teach Scripture to little ones is to do it in song. I've written a hand full of songs that are pure Scripture. Of course Tornado's still only doing 1 word at a time and hasn't begun to sing with me, he will learn in time. :)

That reminds me of my nephew Tyson (Dayna's youngest). When he was learning to say the Pledge of Allegiance, he would constantly say "I pledge allegiance, to the FROG," just to be silly. As soon as it would come out of his mouth he would almost fall down laughing so hard at himself.

I think that is just absolutely awsome that the odler moms put this together for you guys. Hmm, maybe we should so something similar at our church!

I'm SO glad you explained the difference between the "older" moms and the "younger" moms, LoL.
My kids are 10 and under (which at our church still makes me somewhat young) but I sure do feel old!

They use the same method at our church for teaching the kids scripture. Another great way is teaching them scripture songs. This year at VBS they used this method (also using sign language with it) and you wouldn't believe how quickly the kids learned the songs; my daughters been driving me a little crazy because she insists on singing them over and over and over... I'm trying to get her to change her channnel, LoL.

I wonder what Mrs.Darling means by "odler" moms? I'm a little odd myself, wonder if I qualify? Hahaha:)

By the way, "All we like chickens have gone astray" may not be scriptural, but it's awful cute!

Nikki,

I think that Sarah Beth is doing great! Though I know how you feel. I have a friend whose son is just a little older than Joshua and is way ahead of him (and always has been) in a lot of things. It can get a little frustrating. But I know that there is nothing wrong with Joshua...he's just a different child and learns things at a different speed. Sarah Beth is obviously no dummy!! She'll be reciting that verse before you know it...and I bet it will help to develop her vocabulary too. Just think of how much Scripture she'll know by the time she's Joshua's age! Probably more than I knew when I was in high school. :)
